Lake fork fishing report

Happy New Year to everyone from Lake Fork! This is the beginning of another great year in Texas' big bass capital. I am excited about the fishing season ahead and the many events coming to Lake Fork this year. It is going to host Major League Fishing as well as the return of the Bassmaster Elite Series. A lot of big bass will be caught in it and there will be a large crowd in attendance.

The lake is in very good condition to start the season. We had not rained much recently. It is relatively dry with the exception of a few isolated showers, but spring is approaching. We are currently sitting down about 2 1/2 feet. Since we get continuous rain in this waterfall, it will not take long to bring the lake to the pool.

We have some scattered grasses that have started growing throughout the lake. Water temperatures are typical for winter conditions at 50–55 degrees, with occasional dips in the high 40s on cold days. The lake is clear to 2 feet in most areas on the main lake with more stained water behind the main feeder creek.

Bass fishing at Lake Thorn in January is much better than most people would expect. The cold weather keeps most people away. You will not usually catch a lot of fish but the fish you catch are big. So, if you do not mind the cold and quality over quantity is your goal, you will want to get out some early in the year before the warming starts and the spring crowds start hitting the lake.

Shallow fishing has been my primary focus this time of year. I think fishing in these areas is more consistent because I target fish that have already begun to transition to their early pre-spawn activities. As the water starts heating up you will find more and more fish moving. The best depth is from 2-6 feet of water. Secondary points leading to the main lake and major spawning areas are good places to start.

Water temperature is important and finding the hottest areas of the lake will produce the best. The presence of bait is also an important factor as well as the bass falls heavily on threadfin and gizzard shad. I like to start by covering water with reaction baits like Ready / Orange lipless crank bait like Berkeley Warpig. If you can reel it in the past, cut it with grass, tuck it into a tree or cover it all better. These fish will react to it and bite it! Other great options for reaction bait are choices oz Santone Lures spinner bait with a single Colorado blade in chart / white or black / chart.

I also use a z oz chatter feed in white or chart / white at this time of year. Paying off lots of castes on covering water and with banks will stop. Remember to hit everything at different casting angles to make sure you are covering the areas well. If you catch a few fish in a certain range of the bank then make sure and track back and make several routes from that area. Keeping these fish in these areas is a major feature.

Sometimes it is a trench or drain, a downward change of rock, a change in depth to sand, or vegetation, which causes fish to catch. If the shallows harden for fishing, I like to back up a little deeper and throw a slightly heavier layered bait like the l oz model. I will also break the suspended shocks on the "All New" Abu Garcia Variety Rod to be paired with the Revo high speed reel so that I can make it go longer distances.

Jolt weights can actually save the day especially when the cold and sunshine are more in cool wind conditions. I like to throw gold, chrome, or clown colors. If I can get away with this I like to use a shorter line like the 12lb triline 100% fluorocarbon. Otherwise if I am in heavy cover, I opt for 15 lb. I will also pull the edges of the creek channel and flip the wood at this time of year. The depth I aim for is 8–16 feet. With low water conditions, you can actually read the water and tell exactly where the creek runs from the middle of the area you are fishing.

I would take a Santon Lars 3/8 ounce or 1/2 ounce Ratlin jig and pitch it to every tree along the channel edges. Pay attention to the direction in which the wind is blowing, because the fish will exert themselves in a certain way on the wood according to the wind direction and channel drops. I like to focus on areas where the creek makes a bend and especially if it bends near one point or another of the lower structure.

My favorite jig colors in January are Black / Blue, Black / Blue / Purple and Jessie's Spicy Crow. I would take my jig with a Berkeley Power Bat Chigger Cragg or Havoc Pit Boss in matching colors. The large female bass of Lake Fork cannot resist this jig combination and it catches some monsters every year!

Also check for deep bites as many fish are still roaming deep. Although most of these fish are hard to intercept, I will look at the main lake structure on my Garmin electronics. Hard to hide from Garmin Livescope! I will look for schools around Chara in 18-25 feet. Sometimes the bass are suspended but you can hold them on a large fluff spoon or a small slab spoon.

Tail kickers are very productive as well as drop shots with a clever worm. I like to use melon red, chart pepper and red shade colors during winter. I have been catching a number of fish on the Hog Farmer Umbrella Rig in association with Santon Rig Heads and Berkeley's Jordan Lee Series Swimbits. It is not easy to have the right equipment. Once you start fishing on it, it's fun!

If you are headed to Lake Fork this month in search of a trophy bass and are looking to book a guide, I will give you or your group the opportunity to go fishing and show you a wonderful time at the lake. I still have some winter dates available and am taking a lot of spring reservations. If you want to fish in 2020 then be sure to schedule with me soon.

Looking for 2019 at lake fork

When you are having fun, then it flies, and how has my year gone! I thought it would be nice to share some of our most memorable fish so far this year. I have to say that this year our boat had a lot of BLEDED days, here on Lake Fork. Yes, there were some hard days of fishing as well. That fishing.

Lake Thorn is the heaviest pressurized reservoir in the world, as far as I know. If you go out on this lake and you have a good day and catch some fish, you have done something really special. The majority of Lake Fork trips end in disappointment. This is just the reality. However, being on water almost everyday is definitely an advantage. Many other awesome lakes in the region are great for those times when Lake Fork is stubborn.

It is always good to look back through photos of big fish and remember each trip. We had some amazing fish this year. Some of those fish were unexpected surprises at the end of a good day. Others were those who made a round. The biggest of 2019 for my boat, was my client's only bite that day! thinking about him!

Right now the lake is somewhere between fall and winter mode. We have good weather, and arctic weather, and have returned to good weather. The water is in the mid-50s and the lake level is 2 feet below the pool.

Here are some highlights from 2019. These are not all the biggest fish, just to show what a great year it was. The first photo is my favorite. He is my father and me. My people spent Memorial Day weekend with me here on Lake Fork and I had to spend a few hours on the water with them!

My oh my, what a month! Lake fork report

As you can see from the pictures, it has been a busy week for me! We had some hard days and we had some terrible days. Earlier in August, I slipped into Falcon Lake for a couple of weeks and took some customers after some range bass! Even though I am a lake fork guide, it is fun to change the scenery every time.

Lake Thorn has been a bit slow for me lately, but this is what I expect this year. Things will pick up when the weather gets colder. The water temperature is now near 90. It's so hot, I don't care where you are. However, the big ones are yet to be caught. As a matter of fact, my client caught a big one this morning. That's good about Lake Fork ... when it's slow, anyone can still come on the cast.

Falcon Lake was a blast as usual. We had a few slow days, but the fish started biting a little better towards the end of the trip. The water is really low there, and I think I would trek again a few years ago. Although you never know. The trips below are fun, but it also makes you appreciate a lot of things about the house. East Texas is a good place.

11 June Lake fork report and pictures

June has become a wonderful month so far on Lake Fork! We just wrapped up another good day on the water, and most of my trips have been above average for the past few weeks. The lake fork is slightly above the full pool and the water temperature is right at 82 degrees. It is good in appearance, and the water color will not improve.

I am mixing it up and fishing in many areas during the day, some shallow, some mid-depth and some deep. I feel like I can catch some way now. I mostly depend on the jig, but many techniques are working.

Two great days at Lake Thorn with some Tennessee boys!

And finally, one of the most special days I was on the water in a while. My mom and dad came all the way from Tennessee to see Lake Fork. They wanted to ride in the skater and watch me catch one or two fish. In about 2 hours I was able to show them something good. God has been good to me, who loves me to live.

May 7 Lake Fork Report

Lake Thorn has produced some big fish for us in the last few weeks! I have been doing some great trips so far this year. Of course, there have been some difficult days here and there, but we expect to be with whatever rain has fallen. All in all, it has been one of my better spring seasons for quality fish. The number is not very good for anyone, but we are holding good quality.

The water level has been everywhere for the past one week, but it is stable now. The SRA has a lake slightly below full pool today, and I'm sure they are relieved. The lake fork looks great right now, given how sloppy it can be. Even the upper extremity areas do not look bad.

Right now there are fish everywhere. Okay, they are not really all over the place, they are really just some places. However, you will find some shallows, and some deeper. We are in that difficult transitional period which happens at some point in May every year. This does not in any way mark the end of shallow fishing, but more fish are moving in their deeper patterns daily.

I am excited for the next few weeks. May and early June were very good last year for the most part on Lake Fork. I have some different techniques and I am eager to try in those areas.

The following scripture has really helped me this season. This is one of those you hear all the time, but I have trusted this promise recently. “Trust in Jehovah with all your heart; And do not lean your understanding. Accept him in all ways, and he will direct your way.

Lake fork report

Things have changed a lot on Lake Fork in the last few weeks! If you are watching the news, then you know that there has been a lot of rain in East Texas in the last two weeks. However we did not have any issues around the lake. We got just enough rain to bring the full pool level up. Right now we are sitting a few inches below the full.

Breaking the record of low temperatures for this time of year in our region, we got a cool time with rain. Due to which the water temperature has come down considerably. In the mid-60s around the lake.

There are shallow lots of fish for those who like the style of fishing. Topwater quickly, then light Texas rigs, small swimbaits, and jigs are working for shallow fishermen I know. Drop shot production will also continue.

There are also some fish in deep water. Look for fish at the ends of points on the main lake humps, and pond dams. Road beds are always good in the fall as well. The more clever type of presentations will take place at the best time of the year. When the water will actually cool by the end of the month, the larger fish will begin to appear with more regularity.
