There are two successive hermaphrodites. Protected hermaphrodites are born male and can change into a female. Protogynous hermaphrodites are born female and can change into male.

Anthias are living hermaphrodites. They are all born female. When a male dies, another larger female anthias changes into a male. Most Anthias are female; even a large anthias school like this has only a few men.
